Sensory Science

The five sensory pillars
Your senses are the fastest route to your nervous system, and the fastest route to cortisol.

One nervous system. One Ritual.

BONJIL turns that around. Every part of the Ritual sends the opposite signal across all five senses, so calm reaches your skin before a single product does.
The Evidence

The five-sense model comes from the literature

One sense reduces cortisol. Five together create a stronger, supraadditive effect—supported by 48,000 participants and four decades of research. We engineered the protocol, not the science.

01
Hear
Sound that slows the body
The Ritual begins with rhythm. Music chosen the way a cardiologist would choose it.
Compositions at sixty to eighty beats per minute, the tempo at which the vagus nerve fires most strongly. Measurable parasympathetic activation within three minutes.
d = 0.72 — pooled effect of music therapy on stress, across 104 randomized trials.

02
See
A visual exhale
Warm light. Calm color. Biophilic geometry. Engineered to register as safety.
Light calibrated to 2700K, the warm range that signals evening. Fractal complexity in the natural-aesthetic optimum. The eye reads the room as nature before the mind does.
−12.4% — cortisol reduction from biophilic visual exposure (Park et al. field studies).

03
Smell
The fastest route to limbic
Olfaction is the only sense that bypasses the thalamic relay. It reaches the amygdala first.
Calibrated aromatic load: lavender, bergamot, vanilla, each selected against the literature for parasympathetic engagement and dosed to subliminal-to-comfortable intensity.
SMD 1.14 — effect of inhaled aromatherapy, the largest single-sense effect in the literature.

04
Touch
The velocity the skin was built for
Three centimeters per second. The speed at which affective touch fibers fire most strongly.
The application sequence is calibrated to C-tactile afferents. The result is endogenous oxytocin release and direct vagal engagement.
g = 0.52 — effect of affective touch on cortisol, across 12,966 participants and 137 studies.

05
Taste
Calm from the inside out
The gustatory channel. Vagal input from the stomach. Marine collagen with documented dermal effect.
Warm tea activates vagal afferents from gastric thermoceptors. The take-home is a marine collagen shown to reach the skin and elevate hyaluronic acid synthesis.
n = 1,721 — participants in the marine collagen meta-analysis showing measurable dermal effect.

The Result

Five together more than double any one alone

The five pathways converge on shared parasympathetic and HPA targets. Additive at the mechanism level, supraadditive at the experience level.
